Airway and breathing
After bleeding control, a clear airway takes priority over everything else. Here you will find the equipment for keeping the airway open and for ventilation — from pocket masks to laryngeal masks.
Airway and breathing equipment for emergencies and clinical settings. Pocket masks and face shields, bag-valve masks, oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal airways, laryngeal masks, oxygen masks and suction equipment from Laerdal, Ambu, Intersurgical, Rüsch and Dahlhausen.
Frequently asked questions about airway and breathing
What equipment should a basic kit contain?
A pocket mask or a face shield goes a long way and requires no further training to use. A bag-valve mask, oropharyngeal airway and nasopharyngeal airway require the person carrying them to be practised in their use. A laryngeal mask belongs with those who have formal training in airway management.
How do I choose the right bag-valve mask size?
By the patient's weight, not by age. The series are divided into infant 2.5–12 kg, child 10–20 kg and adult over 20 kg. Organisations that encounter both children and adults need more than one size, and the paediatric bags are available with a pressure-limiting valve.
What is the difference between an oropharyngeal and a nasopharyngeal airway?
An oropharyngeal airway is inserted through the mouth and is poorly tolerated by someone whose reflexes are still intact. A nasopharyngeal airway, inserted through the nose, is generally better tolerated. Both come in several sizes and sizing is done on the patient — which one suits which situation is a matter for training.
Do I need suction equipment?
A portable suction unit is heavy and expensive relative to how often it is used, and belongs in vehicles, in emergency stores and in organisations with their own medical capability. In a kit carried on the body, a pocket mask and airway adjuncts take priority.
Can the pocket mask be reused?
The mask is designed to be cleaned and reused, while the one-way valve and filter are replaced between patients — both are sold separately and in multipacks. Courses and workplaces often buy one mask per participant and filters in sets.
