Folding knives for everyday use

Benchmade Bugout 535GRY-1 is the lightweight folding knife for anyone who wants to carry a knife without noticing it. Bailout 537GY has a tanto blade in CPM-3V and is the more robust of the two. Both are built for one-handed opening and to be carried in a pocket rather than on the belt.

Choosing between them: the Bugout if weight is decisive, the Bailout if the knife needs to handle tougher tasks.

Rescue tools — an edge that does not reach the skin

Triage 915 combines a blade, a belt cutter and a glass breaker in one tool. Rescue Hook 7 and 8 BLKW and the 9 CB Hook are hooks with a recessed edge: they cut through fabric and belts but glide over the skin, which makes them the first choice when clothing has to come off an injured person.

The same principle applies to the S-CUT range from ES Equipment: the QE roller knife in black and blue, with a rolling edge that draws through fabric with little force, and the XC-E multitool. There are three belt holsters for them — leather, textile with clip and MOLLE mount — and the holster determines whether the tool is to hand or stays in the bag.

Trauma Shears Large from North American Rescue are heavy-duty shears that cope with tougher fabric than ordinary bandage scissors.

Dagger

Benchmade SOCP dagger 176BKSN in 440C steel with a MOLLE sheath. A slim, light tool intended to be carried fixed to your load-bearing equipment.

Placement is half the function

A knife or cutting tool that is to be used in a real situation must be reachable with one hand — the other may be occupied or injured. Holsters and mounts are under equipment, and the medical supplies the tool opens the way to are under trauma and bleeding control.

Frequently asked questions about knives

What is the difference between a rescue hook and an ordinary knife?

The hook has its edge recessed behind a guide edge that runs against the skin. The tool therefore cuts the fabric and glides over the body, which means you can confidently pull it all the way through a jacket or a belt. An ordinary knife edge requires you to hold the fabric against the blade and lift it first.

Roller knife or hook?

The roller knife has a rotating edge that draws through fabric with very little force and works well on several layers. The hook grips a belt or an edge faster and is easier to use with gloves. Many carry one in the kit and the other on the belt.

Do I need a holster for the S-CUT tool?

Yes, in practice. A tool loose in the bag cannot be found in the dark or under stress, and that is exactly why there are three holster options: leather for the belt, textile with clip for quickly moving between garments, and MOLLE for mounting on a vest or backpack.

Can the Bugout and Bailout be opened with one hand?

Both are designed for one-handed opening, which is the whole point of a folding knife on duty. Practise the movement with the gloves you actually wear — a grip that works with bare hands is rarely the same one that works with a heavier work glove on, and you only notice when you really need the knife.
