In a time-critical situation involving a potentially fatal tension pneumothorax, the equipment must perform without any margin for error. TyTek TPAK is designed to reduce cognitive friction when fine motor skills deteriorate under extreme stress. The device has a textured hexagonal cap that enables an immediate, secure grip, allowing the seal to be broken quickly even when wearing wet, bloody or thick protective gloves. The needle and catheter are enclosed in a hard, impact-resistant polymer case that eliminates the risk of crush damage when the equipment is packed in a tightly filled IFAK or response backpack. After use, the case serves as a secure disposal container for the bloodied steel needle.

Catheter-over-Needle Design and Immediate Diagnosis

The function is based on a reinforced catheter-over-needle design. The steel needle acts as a trocar to penetrate the skin, muscle and fascia. The indwelling outer polymer catheter is made of materials that withstand extreme temperatures to maintain structural flexibility and prevent the catheter from bending or kinking as the muscles close around it. To prevent the needle from being inserted too deeply and damaging vital organs, TPAK is equipped with a capless flash chamber. At the precise instant the needle tip reaches the pleura and enters the pressurised space, gas and fluid are forced through the needle shaft, giving the operator an immediate diagnostic signal through a distinct hissing sound ("hissing sound") and visual confirmation.
